The King's Own Calgary Regiment
The King's Own Calgary Regiment (RCAC) is an armored unit of the Canadian Forces based in Alberta, Canada. This regiment was born in Calgary, Alberta on April 1, 1910. It was reorganized on March 15, 1920 into two separate regiments , one of which was named "The Alberta Regiment" (now "The South Alberta Light Horse") and "The Calgary Regiment". The regiment was reorganized again on May 15, 1924 and reorganized into two separate regiments , one of which was named "The Calgary Highlanders" and the other was "The Calgary Regiment".
On April 1, 1936, it merged with the "Headquarters" and the "B Company" of the "13th Machine Gun Battalion, CMGC" retaining the same name.
It was renamed "The Calgary Regiment (Tank)" on December 15, 1936, "14th (Reserve) Army Tank Battalion, (The Calgary Regiment (Tank))" on April 1, 1941, "14th (Reserve) Army Tank Regiment, (The Calgary Regiment (Tank)) "August 15, 1942," 14th Armored Regiment (Calgary Regiment), RCAC "April 1, 1946," 14th Armored Regiment (King's Own Calgary Regiment) "July 22, 1946," The King's Own Calgary Regiment (14th Armored Regiment) "on February 4, 1949 and" The King's Own Calgary Regiment (RCAC) "on May 19, 1958.
During the Second World War, detachments of this regiment were mobilized for service on August 26, 1939 and were put into active service on September 1, 1939, under the name of "The Calgary Regiment (Tank), CASF", providing services regional protection. The detachments mobilized for active service were dissolved on December 31, 1940.
Subsequently, the regiment mobilized an armored regiment baptized "14th Army Tank Battalion (The Calgary Regiment (Tank)), CAC, CASF" on February 11, 1941. It was renamed "14th Army Tank Regiment (The Calgary Regiment (Tank)), CAC , CASF "on May 15, 1942," 14th Armored Regiment (The Calgary Regiment), CAC, CASF "on August 26, 1943 and" 14th Armored Regiment (The Calgary Regiment), RCAC, CASF "on August 2, 1945.
This unit embarked for Great Britain on June 20, 1941. The regiment took part in the Dieppe raid on August 19, 1942 as the first unit of the Canadian Armored Corps to come into action.
The regiment joined Sicily on July 13, 1943 as part of the 1st Armored Brigade of the Canadian Army, and Italy on September 3, 1943. On March 9, 1945, it found itself in the North West of Europe with the 1st Canadian Corps, where he fought as a component of the 1st Armored Brigade until the end of the war. This overseas regiment was disbanded on December 15, 1945.
